Vegvisir is a compass that came from the Nordic runic magic tradition. It is said that any wearer of this wayfaring symbol would always avoid getting lost and would always find their way back. In Icelandic, Vegvisir (pronounced VEGG-vee-seer) means "that which shows the way". The Huld design is a bit different from other more credible manuscripts showing the same symbol, however it has become the most popular through its publication in modern culture. The origin of the symbol, although unknown, is probably dated between 1650 and 1700 CE. The Vegvisir is a symbol that is supposed to give the person wearing the symbol (or having it tattooed) to have the ability to get through rough weather and survive even if you don’t necessarily know the way. You could call this a symbol of protection. In modern times, this symbol is also referred to as the See the Way or the Runic Compass.
